Thank you to the author and Readers First for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was my first experience of this author, Dinah Jefferies, and I was aware that this is the third book in a series but was led to believe it also worked as a stand-alone novel. Having finished the book, yes, I did feel it works as a stand-alone, but I also felt like bits were missing or left unexplained which might not have been if I had already read the first two books. The storyline itself is great and shows a lot of thought and potential, and some of the descriptions of the locations really bring the setting to life. I could almost taste the exotic spices in the air. With that being said, I felt as though there didn’t seem to be any reason behind the title as the night train itself is barely referenced within the book. A lot of the characters didn’t really come together for me and a lot of the scrapes the main protagonist, Vicky, gets herself into felt a bit far-fetched. I finished the book and enjoyed it, but I felt there was too much background information missing and I was very put off by the numerous typos that had made it past the editors – I counted over 25 which for me was far too many to have made it all the way to publication. *I do not know for sure if my copy was an advanced reader version, but it did not appear to be so* It was enjoyable, but I think if you want to read it, definitely ensure you have read the first two beforehand.
