From the first look, Nightcrawling looks set to be an emotional and thought-provoking read. The story is set in Oakland, California, where we follow seventeen year old Kiara as she tries to figure out what to do now that her apartment rent is about to double. With her parents gone, her brother not working, and her neighbour's nine year old son relying on her, she is left to carry a burden unimaginable for one so young. I found what I read so far to be thoroughly engaging and beautifully written, touching on many important issues surrounding poverty and the barriers and burdens of women in poor communities.
