The title of this review states this was a difficult read for me. The authorial voice did work for me - the read is kept at arms length which sone my find difficult but I found that added to the experience
Longlisted for the 2022 Booker prize and I would expect it to make the short list as well. At times I felt it lacked polish but it is an extremely impressive debut novel. It is partly based on a true story which is even more depressing. Even though it is debut novel I wish the editor had a bit of a heavier hand to smooth out sone of the rough edges.
Mottley has certainly hit a home run. Debit movel gets published by Knopf and the. It gets picked for Oprahs bookclub and then Booker Longlist.
I will look out for her next book. If she can write this well as such a young age, hopefully we have many more great books from her to come in the future. We can only wait.
