I wasn't expecting to like this book, in the first couple of chapters I thought this wouldn't be one for me, a bit too gritty and raw. But I was wrong.
Fast forward and I can't put it down, I was so immersed in the characters and the story that I couldn't wait to find out how it would resolve. Reading the author's notes at the back and realising that Kiara's character was based around a true story of police corruption in Oakland made it even more poignant.
Kiara is forced to turn to walking the streets when her landlord puts the rent up and her brother, intent on pursuing his dream of becoming a rapper, refuses to hold down a regular job. One night she's arrested, and the police begin to blackmail her into becoming one of 'their girls'. When an officer commits suicide and names her in his suicide note, an investigation begins and her name is leaked to the media.
The writing is absolutely fabulous, I was totally immersed and would love to read more from this author.
