Wow! I simply can't believe firstly that this is a debut and secondly that it was written by someone so young. it's easy to see why this is on the Bookerprize longlist and I think it could be a tough one to beat .

It's a powerful story based on a true scandal that rocked the Oakland police department , it is very raw, heartbreaking and because it is somewhat true to life it leaves a real punch . Such detail is given to the police corruption and sexual exploitation of young black women that it is by no means an easy reading experience but it will keep you gripped.

The oakland setting is also done brilliantly. As a reader you feel yourself in the city, the streets, people, music , stores , in your head you are there. I guess if oakland is your hometown then this will seem all the more true to life .

The writing is amazing and you can tell that she is a poet as the prose is so observant. I cannot wait to see what else is to come from such talent.
