I feel like this book should have come out a couple of years ago when the black lives matter movement was really hitting the news. I can wholeheartedly believe, and it does not surprise me one bit, that this story involves corrupt police departments. It seems every documentary thats based on a true story involves the police. It's not surprising that so many people take matters into their own hands.

Anyway, Kiara is a young 17 year old black woman, living in Oakland, trying to survive. Her older brother Marcus can't keep down a job and has dreams of becoming a huge music star. She has also taken over the care of her neighbours boy Trevor, whose mum has a habit of disappearing for long lengths of time. Kiara is fast running out of money and the landlord is threatening to evict them all if she doesn't find the money to pay the rent. Marcus is out of the picture as he is too focused on making music, badly, and nowhere is hiring a black girl with no work experience. Kiara turns to the only thing she las left, selling her body for money. Unfortunately for her, a patrolling policeman catches her in the act and enrolls her into his and his workmates nighttime activities, sometimes for money and sometimes just for the sheer fun of it. Beaten and broken and nowhere else to turn Kiara gets found by an undercover cop who is determined to make the corrupt coppers pay.

Sad and so very true. There are many women of all races out there trying to survive the only way they know how. Worth a read.
