I was first drawn in by the title and cover of the book, bringing to mind the intrigue and danger of night-time and darkness.
Upon starting the book I was then interested by the cast of compelling characters who leave you wanting to discover more about their stories and their relationships with each other. This books seems to emphasise the complexity of friendly and familial relationships.
The setting of the book also paints a vivid picture of the environment inhabited by our protagonist, Kiara. The apartment block feels lived-in and authentic, with excellent descriptions of the architectural features, which serve to highlight the difficulties and the harsh realities of life there.
