I was unsure how much I would enjoy Nightcrawling, as the synopsis isn't one I would typically pick, but I do remember being slightly intrigued by the initial first look. The book follows the story of Kiara, a seventeen-year-old girl who finds herself working on the streets in Oakland, in order to keep a roof above her and her families head. She finds herself in trouble with the police and ends up testifying in court.

I find the premise of Nightcrawling really moving, especially after the author's note at the end detailing the true basis for the book. However, I found the book initially hard to get into, and felt that the real story didn't start until much after halfway through. It then seemed to pick up pace, but I still felt that not enough time and detail was spent on the main focus and story line. I would have also liked additional information on Ale and Kiara's relationship, as it was unclear about their past status and how things had been left. The ending of the book was weak for me (and also a disappointing outcome for Kiara!), and again I wanted more answers in regards to what happened to specific characters e.g. Marcus, Trevor.

Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend this book to others, although I do think that the story line has great potential, and I'm sure that many other readers will enjoy the book. The front cover is very striking and powerful.
