Night Crawling by Leila Mottley is a heart breaking story of a young 17 year old girl trying to survive anyway she can.
Kiara lives with her older brother, as her dad died a few years ago and mum is in a half way house following a horrible crime.
Her brother is obsessed with becoming a rap star like their uncle who abandoned them when their mum went to jail. So obsessed he quit his job.
Kiara looks after the young son of a addict neighbour who vanishes leaving her to fend for all 3 of them.
Having no luck finding a job she follows a downward spiral of becoming a prostitute. This leads to her becoming isolated from her brother and best friend. Picked up by the police one night she ends up being blackmailed by them into doing acts she never wanted too.
This leads to a grand jury trial which might just be her way out.
This story was bleak and quite hard to read in parts. However it was very well written and I felt myself rooting for Kiara.
