This narrative takes place in Oakland, California, and while there are a few areas in Oakland that are considered rather well-off by some, Kiara Johnson does not live in one of them. Kiara lives in a run-down apartment complex called Regal-Hi Apartments, where the only thing high about it are some of the occupants. There is a pool, which is ornamented with discarded bags filled with dog crap floating on the surface. This is Kiara's home; she has nowhere else to go.
Kiara's family appears to be losing everything one step at a time, and each step reduces her by removing the people she loves. They are bankrupt, and their rent is due. Kiara tries for work wherever she can think of, but local businesses refuse to hire her. She travels to the strip club in the hopes that her brother's ex-girlfriend, who works as a bartender, will hire her, but at 17, she is too young. Her brother's ex is sorry for not being able to assist, so she offers her a drink. Then another, and then two more. As she goes out of the club, a man follows her, brings her to a location, and then pushes an unexpected roll of money into her hand and walks away.
