Nightcrawling is not for the faint hearted. This impressive debut, written when Leila Mottley was just seventeen packs an emotional punch that will stay wih you long after you close the book.
Set in Oakland this novel tells the story of Kiara, a teenager forced by circumsatnces into sex work and the expolitation she faces from those employed to protect her.
Kiara is a fierce character and from the opening pages you are routing for her but be warned her journey will not be easy and she will face hardships some will find triggering but reflect all too well the realilty facing those similar situations. Her bond with her young neighbour Trevor will break your heart and her determination to keep him safe will endear you to her even more.
I did feel at times that some of the scenes seemed relenteless but there aremoments of joy and hope for the future, expecially when Trevor is involved.
All in all this is a great debut and I am looking forward to seeing how Leila Mottley evolves as an author.
