I found this a tough read. It took me a while as I kept putting it down and coming back to it. I think even harder as it is based on a true story.
This is the story of seventeen year old Kiara, who is struggling to keep the roof over her and her brothers (Marcus) head while also looking out for their very young neighbour (Trevor)who’s mum comes and goes has she pleases. Her brother seems to have given up trying to support them because he thinks he can make it big by becoming something in the music industry. He is very hard to empathise with and i found myself wondering why Kiara bothered.
Her descent into prostitution is heartbreaking as she could have madecso much more of herself if not for circumstances.
Overall a harsh critique on both society and authority where noone comes out of it very well at all.
It is well written, I just didn't gel with the subject matter.
