I bought this book on the back of seeing rave reviews and, although it’s a difficult read, I’m so glad I did. The writing is incredible, made even more impressive by the fact that the author started writing it when she was just 17! Kiara, the protagonist, has so much to cope with on such young shoulders. She is forced in to the position of having to do whatever it takes in order to take care of her older brother and young neighbour. Kiara ends up having to make decisions that no young girl should ever have to make. The events in this book are absolutely soul destroying and it broke my heart to read in the author’s note at the end that they are based on true events. This book is a no-holds-barred punch in the gut and is one I will think about for a long time. It doesn’t feel right to rate it because of the content but it is a brilliantly written emotional story. I have given it five stars here as no other rating would do.
