Poetic and hard-hitting

This was definitely an eye-opening book, one which showed me a world I could scarcely believe exists in today's times - made all the more hard-hitting because it's based on a true story. The story was written in a poetic style which was different to most other books, it didn't get in the way of the narrative for me though. The language used was appropriate for the characters, but even in the descriptive sections where no one was speaking, it wasn't written in formal English, so there'd be phrases like 'I don't got no job' which grated on me slightly, but I can see why it was done. The story itself was sad that some people live like that, and that the system can manipulate vulnerable people to keep them quiet. I felt like I wanted an Appendix to show where the characters were in a year or so's time, as I wanted to know what had happened to them, but the Appendix showing the real-life events which had inspired the story was welcome.
