This is not my usual genre of book but I was immediately hooked by the first few chapters and wanted to find out where this went. I will start with the fact that this is a hard read, it is a gritty raw and emotional look at the life of Kiara and those around her. She has only her brother to look out for her as her mother is in prison and her father died, a terrible start to life and unfortunately it doesn't go much better for her. She is struggling to make ends meet and her brother is of no help, coupled with the fact the neighbours child is also seen as her responsibility, she is struggling to get through.
This is written so beautifully and captures the scene as well as the feelings of Kiara as she tries to get by with ever increasing barriers in her way. The author really sets the tone perfectly and while the story is definitely no fairy tale you end up drawn in from the get go.
