This is a novel to look out for and read. Outstanding writing for a debut. Even though the story is heartbreaking, the poetic lines sprinkled throughout the storytelling made this book shine. I'm looking forward to hearing more from Leila Mottley. I'm excited to see what she writes next because there's no denying her talent.
Because it is based on true events, this book was heartbreaking and difficult to read. The author was only seventeen years old when she wrote it, but I had no idea; in fact, it was quite the opposite. Despite the dark subject matter, the prose in this novel is lyrical and poetic. This is not a book for the faint of heart or stomach, but if triggers don't bother you and you're up for a gritty story, I highly recommend it just for the writing.
This was an excellent debut novel, brilliantly written, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I hope to read more from this author. Definitely a 5* read!!
