Firstly, people should be warned that this book covers sexual exploitation of minors, and as a result is a difficult read at times. It's written with colloquialisms, and in the speech pattern of the main character which I felt helped with the immersion. One thing I found difficult sometimes is that the writing is almost like spoken word poetry, but I found out the author is also a poet, so it makes sense. As this is her debut, it will be interesting to see if this style remains throughout later works. The subject of the novel is based on true events, which was truly eye opening and informative. I found a lot of the characters quite unlikeable but I think this was intentional, and made them feel more real. Overall, I think it was a great debut, but found it hard to convince myself to pick it up at times due to the unpleasant subject matter. I'll be interested to see what the author does next.
