We open with the decline of migratory birds as their food source disappears and then move to Boston’s Logan airport where Syrian, Hadi has been refused re-entry to the US after his trip to Jordan to bury his father. A new executive order has made him, with no evidence of any wrongdoing, an undesirable alien Meanwhile his wife is going into early labour. The opening to the story is almost unbearably tense and compulsive though distressing reading. The sheer humanity of it all is almost overwhelming. A compelling read which will not of course be read by those who would most learn from it. Cannot wait to read the rest of the book although my heart will be in my mouth the whole time hoping against hope for a happy ending
