REVIEW – No Land to Light On – Yara Zgheib

No Land to Light On is the story of a Syrian couple living in the US, Hadi and Sama. The couple are expecting their first child but Hadi’s father passes away suddenly, meaning he has to fly back for the funeral. Upon his return to the US, Hadi is barred by Customs due to the Muslim Travel Ban that was put in place overnight, despite having refugee status. Sama goes into early labour as a result of the stress induced by the Ban and the couple live in uncertainty if Hadi will ever meet his son.

God, this was heart-wrenching. The book is beautifully written and leaves readers with a glimmer of hope after the unjustified hatred. I loved the flashbacks to how the couple met and the fact that we got POVs from both characters, it really adds to the sadness (I love a sad read hehe x), but also to the anger towards the unjustifiable Travel Ban which was put In place in 2017 by D*nald Tr*mp. This story puts a human face on the struggles we hear about in the news every day. Great for people who are in a slump as it’s a page turner and great for those who are fans of Khaled Hosseini or Christy Lefteri’s work.
