This tells the story of two refugees, Hadi and Sama, who are both beginning a new life in America. It touches on their previous hardships through flashbacks and this allows us to grow closer to them as characters - it touches on loss as well as other personal struggles that i thought were written extremely well. It then goes on to talk about a pregnant Sama who is awaiting the arrival of her husband at the airport. However, due to the new immigration laws, this isn’t possible.

It talks about how this rule, that may seem insignificant to so many, affects them and their family. It made me emotional reading this book and seeing how humans sometimes don’t consider others and their actions and it really emphasised how we are all humans at the end of the day. The aspect of Syrian war was also heartbreaking as we got to see the inhumanity of the situation.

Beautifully written - I particularly admire the bird symbolism! I loved how they were used to compare between them and their characters life in unison and this just added to the poetic aspect of the book.

One of the reasons, however, that i gave this 4 stars instead of 5, was simply the fact that i wasn’t too much of a fan of the ending. It was personally too open ended for me and i would have preferred a certain outcome.

Overall, i recommend as it is thought provoking and an essential read.
