A very original and beautifully written story, which tells the story of Hadi and Sama, two refugees starting a new life in America. They have already gone through loss, hardship and personal struggles, which are covered during flashbacks later in the book, but we enter their lives when Sama, who is pregnant, is waiting at the airport for Hadi to return from Jordan after burying his father. Their lives and future plans are thrown into disarray because of new immigration laws that are enacted at the same time as Hadi returns.

The story beautifully and heart-wrenchingly tells the story of how this affects them, their child and their families left at home. The author excels at bringing human emotions to life and making you relate to the characters. The movement of people from country to country and the stories of immigrants and refugees is not a new one, but this book really highlights the human cost and the inhumanity of how humans sometimes treat each other.

A book well worth reading and would be perfect to study at school or in a book group, as there are so many elements to discuss.
