When I heard about this book I was really excited to read it. The idea of a story about a married Syrian couple being separated by Trump's executive order banning citizens of Muslim majority countries from entering the US was captivating. At the start of the book, Sama is waiting for her husband Hadi to return home but as he arrives he discovers that his visa has suddenly been denied and he can't re-enter the country.

The idea of the story and all the true stories represented by it is heart-breaking and I expected this to be a really emotional read. However, whilst the story itself was very moving I struggled with the author's writing style and found it really detracted from my ability to get lost in the book. Unfortunately, due to regularly being confused about what is happening in the book or who is talking, I found that I wasn't able to get as much from the book as I was hoping. I still enjoyed reading the overall arc of the story but expected better overall.
