This is such a heartbreaking love story of a couple torn apart just as they are about to welcome their first child into the world. An emotional and thought provoking read.
Hadi and his pregnant wife Sama are a Syrian couple living in the US. Hadi returns to Syria after the death of his father, to attend the funeral. On his return to the US he finds himself unable to enter the country even though he has refugee status. A ban has come into place and refugees are no longer allowed in. As his wife waits for him in the airport he is forced to leave.
Sama goes into labour early and gives birth to a son, because he is premature he spends some time in an incubator in the ICU. Hadi now desperately missing his beloved wife and longing to see his newborn son needs to find a way back to them.
I enjoyed reading this book, the way it is written shows the deep love between the two characters and you can't help but really feel for them, it is heartbreaking. The story is written from the perspective of both characters, which is interesting, although in a couple of places I did get a bit lost. Through out the book there are quotes about birds, although they are interesting I am not totally sure what they had to do with the story and whether or not they really added anything to it.
