Suspense and separation

The calmness which radiates from the simple design and warm colours of No Land to Light On's front cover is at odds with the dramatic events depicted on the pages of the opening chapters, where the use of short sentences builds up suspense in a way that wouldn't necessarily look out of place during a particularly tense phase of a thriller or psychological novel.

The narrative point of view switches between Hadi and Sama; the latter had left Syria behind some time ago and settled in the United States of America, while the former was a new refugee who met Sama at a party. They quickly become a couple with their own place together and Hadi wanted to move his family over as well, but on the eve of their visa appointment his Dad dies and he returns to Syria for the funeral. When he tried to get back into America, Hadi found there was a new ruling in place which prevented him from doing so. Meanwhile, a pregnant Sama is waiting for him to arrive at the airport when she gets caught in a crush at the same time that she is about to go into labour...
