Although the First Impression doesn’t give too much away as regards the plot specifics or story direction, I do have the benefit of having read and enjoyed both of the first two in the series and so the characters are familiar. The first in the series, Little Bones, still sticks out as a startlingly original and entertaining piece of crime fiction and much of that is to do with the characterisation..

First and foremost is fiery champion kick-boxer Garda Cat Connolly - a driven and tenacious cop with a longstanding ambition to become the Garda’s first Forensic Profiler. However, with book 2 ending on a cliffhanger and Cat seriously injured in an explosion her ‘special relationship’ with her superior Dawson O’Rourke looked all set to go to the next level.. There is certainly more than a little chemistry and two-way admiration on the evidence of the brief intro with their frank exchanges and Cat’s stroppy tantrum!

As for the plot itself, whilst bribery over explicit video images has recently become more topical in crime fiction, the hint that Lauren is involved in something with very powerful people pulling the strings is definitely intriguing.. and likewise, the tried and tested behind closed doors look into the marriage of a glamorous couple and the inevitably seedy revelations is never less that SUPREMELY satisfying!
