This book follows the story of Stacey Woods and the lead up and aftermath of sexual assault. The book highlights the naivety of the character that sometimes comes off as childish. However, this shows how easily Stacey was swept up in the interest of a boy and misses warning signs and red flags and ultimately puts herself in danger. However, this naive characterisation does kind of work, because it juxtaposes so drastically with the way Stacey views the world after she has been raped. Her innocence beforehand throws her trauma afterwards into sharp relief. Following this shows the inner turmoil Stacey faces as she comes to terms with what has happened to her and how she wants to proceed. the element of slut-shaming reminded me strongly of the appalling victim-shaming comments in the Stanford University/Brock Turner rape case, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the author took some inspiration from that.Ultimately instils some hope in the reader for the end, but is left at somewhat of an unfinished ending.
