Vida and Dyce and some of the other survivors from the South have managed to bypass the Wall sealing off the South from the North and to take their fight against Renard to his backyard. In an atmosphere of mutual mistrust they most work with the Resistance to kill Renard but to do so they must relive the horrors of their past not only the many viruses they have had to endure but also the discovery of the mushrooms that contain anti-virals albeit that these had been raised on the living dead. Will they be able to reach a mutually acceptable plan of action before the forces of the North find and annihilate them?
However not all is as it seems as there are factions within the Resistance just as there are factions within the survivors from the South which will lead to an unexpected ending to their quest.
As this is the final instalment of a 2 book story there is scope to fill out the life history of Vida and her mother Ruth which will be all too pertinent to the quest of the Resistance.
I enjoyed this book but would probably have enjoyed it more if I had read the first book in the series. I would say that that this book is in much the same class as Nevil Shute’s On the Beach
