When I received this book I saw that it was a sequel, so ordered the previous novel South to read first. I am glad that I did, as although North can be read as a standalone book, the fact that I had read South meant a deeper understanding of what had happened previously and a greater depth in the characters. I feel I would have been constantly wondering what was going on if I hadn't read South first!
I enjoyed North, the descriptions of the landscapes after the viruses and the civil war were vivid. The apparent insanity of those in charge of the North was chilling, especially Adams and his insidious power amongst the people. I found the ending quite shocking even though a lot of the plot reveals were quite obvious to me.
