Innovative
Having read the First Look, North seems to be a refreshing, innovative take on what is quite an archetypal genre. Dystopia, at its heart, centres around a post-apocalyptic focus, which leaves limited room for new stories. Soon, books of this genre blur into one - viruses, zombies, you name it. However, North seems to defy this trope and, although it seems stereotypical, truly breaks the mould. Yes, there is a virus which ravages the planet, and yes that is a common focus of dystopia - but the writing style is what really sets it apart. We are transported to the South in an unexpected way, as the unborn child to a mother having to endure this post-apocalyptic way of life.
Somehow, Owen has created an immersive, engaging read, all the while using second person. The concept is mind-blowing, and Owen makes good use of expressing a maternal love.
In all, North looks to be a brilliant sequel to its predecessor, South, and is immediately going on my To Be Read List. I'd recommend this Duology to anyone.
