I was desperate to just stop reading this after the first couple of pages. It is written from a third person point of view in a completely bewildering effusion of language. When two words would do to describe a location we get five. Whilst this works for some authors it definitely does not in this particular case.

There is little to recommend it from a characterisation point of view either. By the end of the first Chapter we know Oliver has a major crush of Rebekkah Starling and that his dad is an alcoholic. Beyond that I could find little to draw me into the characters.

Fortunately, the second chapter is much more settled in style - still needlessly verbose in areas but generally reads much more fluently. At last we start getting some insights in to Eve, Oliver's mother but I am only just beginning to get the first twinges of maybe being interested in her.

Thus far I would have to say that the cover is the best thing about this book. I have been looking forward to this one since it appeared on it's 14 day countdown on the site just based on the cover alone.
