I've never read any Wilbur Smith books, although i don't know why as they sound right up my street.

This extract was extremely enjoyable, so much crammed into such few pages - stories about his father and grandfather, his own first attempts at writing from the joy at getting a story published to the frustration of constant rejection for his debut novel, to the realisation of what he needed to change to get something published. Finishing off the extract was his own run in as a boy with a black mamba. I am thoroughly intrigued to read more about the real life adventures of this author - which may lead me to finally read some of the novels he created from these real life adventures.

I'd love to win this for my father as much as for myself as i think he would enjoy it even more than me, a man who has never really read much most of his life, but in his 60s has finally discovered the joy of a good book and is constantly asking me for more to read!
