Considering the length of his novels this was a much briefer book, with each of the chapters a self contained reminiscence of a time in his past growing up in Africa and how he used each experience to shape one or more of his novels.

It started off quite interesting with fast paced stories of his early life, but i started enjoying it less by the sceond half, with the bittyness of each chapter i never felt the need to have to immediately read the next chapter to find out what happens next. But this made it a perfect book for dipping in and out of.

It was interesting to find out more about the real life influences on his novels, none of which i have actually read, but it did make me want to check some of them out.
