The story opens with Grace, a young black girl who lives with her midwife Grandmother, Maw Maw.
Grace's mother Bassey seems to spend most of her time away from the house and with the pastor of the local church.
Grace and Maw Maw have a very close and loving relationship, whereas Bassey is attempting to distance herself from the hard life they live.
Once Maw Maw learns Grace has begun her first period, she tells her it is time she learned more about the act of child birth and so takes her to assist in the next delivery in town.
It is while attending this birth that they learn something terrible has befallen Bassey, and we also learn that there are wide ranging implications surrounding the birth itself which puts Maw Maw in danger and ultimately Grace too.
