This story is compelling and powerful. It immerse you in the stomach-churning vicious poverty, dirt and cruelty of segregation in the south of the USA. The thoroughly credible black female characters have such a hard time. The white farmers are generally vicious, arrogant, hypocritical, poor, and privileged in that they can do anything they like with a "nigger".
I thought that I wouldn't like this, especially with its American spellings and words and things I had never heard of, but the story is so compulsive, I couldn't put it down. It is uncomfortable reading, but will surely be a bestseller.
