I found this a tough read: racial prejudice, racial segregation, poverty, violence against women - and that's just in the first few chapters. It's described as contemporary fiction but this part of the book is clearly set much earlier. I liked the idea of skills being handed down through the generations and the relationship between Grace and her grandmother.
