This book provides such a powerful social history and illustrates some very challenging themes, growing up black in America. It does this through a brilliant narrative with really powerful characters. Women who struggle and survive in the most difficult circumstances. Strong women who resolve to make the future better for the children who follow them.
The book allows us to reflect on our own relationships. Through the lens of subsequent generations, facing the same challenges in new eras, we are given the opportunity to look back too. As each generation becomes a mother, they come to understand the way their own mother did their best in their time. This gives the reader space to reflect on the social history of the setting, but also their own social history. Family dynamics set agains social and political context makes this a challenging, powerful book.
Definitely recommend this to older teenagers and beyond.
