“Behind every strong woman are the women who raised her…”

As a woman who spent her formative years growing up living with her father, I don’t necessarily agree with the tagline. But for the sake of the narrative, let’s say that’s true.

One Blood focuses on the bloodline of Grace, her daughter which was taken from her and given away for adoption, and the adoptive mother.
Each of the woman face their own struggles in life and in motherhood, battling with their identity and their place in society.

There are powerful discussions about race, segregation, human rights and what it means to be a Black Mother across various times in America (a nation which is sadly still widely acknowledged to be narrow minded and prejudice when it comes to issues of race).

Blood runs as a theme both literally and metaphorically, so if you’re not comfortable reading about menstruation (or other perfectly normal human bodily functions) then this is not the book for you.
