One Blood tells three inter-grated black female narratives. Flowing through numerous decades it explores one mothers loss, one mothers gain and one mothers decision to chance the course of the women before her.
Written from a perspective I have no personal relation to I have found it a wonderful and heartfelt insight into the lives of black women. Denene Millner has shone a light on the decades of oppression coloured women have faced.
In our current social climate it is vital books and authors such as Denene are given a platform to educate and also inspire others. I found Rae to be the perfect combination of both her mothers and her final decisions in the book were thrilling for any woman to read - reclaiming ones power and autonomy is a narrative that we women are able to find for ourselves so much more now.
The exploration of abuse in relationships is also an integral part of the book and further develops on the plight of all women.
A beautifully written novel and I am honoured to have been able to read it.
