A story that spans generations of women, with the story split into the story of Grace, a teenager in segregated Virginia in the 1960s, whose life is changed after falling pregnant, Lolo who adopts her baby, and Rae who knows she is adopted, which is brought closer to mind just as she is about to become a parent herself.

The three sections are quite distinct in their story, and yet compliment and flow well into each other. Grace’s section is particularly strong, growing up in a family of women, in a dangerous time and place to be Black. All three women encounter racism and micro-aggressions in their lives, and this book sensitively explores this, showing that the times may have changed, but the cruelty has not.

Because of the subject matter I found this a book to read slowly, it can be very hard to read in places, and I felt the ending was a little rush, but I would definitely recommend this book.

It is powerful, and doesn’t shy from some difficult subjects, including violence and abuse. If anyone is interested in reading this, it would be best to check the trigger warnings. It explores generational trauma and how trauma can splinter and affect a family. It can be a difficult book to read, but it is also a well written and strong novel, with some compelling, yet flawed characters.

Thank you to ReadersFirst for sending me a copy of this novel.
