This book stirred up so many emotions in me as I read deeper and deeper into the story. It is divided into three parts, each recounting the story of three generations of a black American family from the perspective of a main female character. It is obvious to see the author written it with a lot of passion and understanding of the the main themes: equality from a woman’s view and discrimination from a person of colour’s view. Although both areas are very well explored at no point does the book come across as a political novel. It starts in the 1960s in the deep South and Jim Crow times, and my heart broke for Grace, all the time hoping for better for her. The love between her and her maw maw was so vast I could feel it in my heart. Her daughter LoLo is the second part and the adversities she faced were similar but with a man she loved and who loved her, she thought she had it all, but had society really changed at all? The final part is Rae, LoLo’s daughter and here the strength and determination really comes through. My favourite quote was her friend saying “ when do we get to the part when we stop acting like the men are the prize?” This is because history has a habit of repeating itself and this book shows the strength it takes to break the cycle.
