The topics discussed in this book such as racial segregation and sexual violence are very important topics that need to be discussed and the way Millner approaches them allows you to be both compassionate and engaged where you are able to emphasise with the characters lives but also want the events of the story to continue playing out.

The characters were extremely complex and that really just bought the book to life, along with the engaging writing that is poetic and lyrical. It was a harsh read but a must and I would recommend that everyone reads to gain an understanding of the reality of abuse, mothers and race.

Overall the story follows the different generations of mothers through time, starting with Grace, who is bought up by her grandmother and ends up pregnant with her baby being put up for adoption. We then see Lolo’s perspective as an adoptive mother and her daughter Rae becoming a mother too.
