This book is about black American women and there lives in four diffrent generations starting from 1960s. It’s about how American society was racist and patriarchal towards the community. The writer has written it in a way where the reader feel sympathetic towards the characters. The book shares the culture and experience they had to go through. I love the imagery of strong women working hard to make the future better for their children. The three women story were so sad but Gracie tore me apart. they were all different stories but all of them linked to each other by motherhood and trauma. There is very little joy or light in this novel but the bond between them, between their stories is special. By the end of the book, I could look past the pain and honor their resiliency. I could recognize the beautiful illustration of how Black women will endure any and everything just to provide for their offspring.
