This was a fascinating look at black American history ranging from 1965 to 2004 through the lives, loves, experiences and treatment of three women, Grace, a birth mother, Lolo, an adoptive mother, and Rae a headstrong daughter.

The book looks at a variety of historical timeframes from the civil unrest of the 1960's to the introduction of black lives matter in the 2000's and is told with a lot of feeling and understanding of how these women were treated through history and how it affected not just them but future generations.

I was daunted by the size of the book (419 pages) but the story kept going at a great pace and apart from a few instances, it held my attention and I was fully absorbed in the lives of these women and their mothers, sisters and friends.

One star dropped for me because after all those pages, the ending felt a little rushed and abrupt and I wanted a more rounded finish to the story for Rae.
