First and foremost, I think it is important to note that this book covers many sensitive themes, so be sure to check the trigger warnings before beginning this book.

This book is broken up into three separate stories from three different Black American mothers, and they span several decades.

The first part of this novel is centred around the story of Grace. She's forced to leave home and live with her Aunt Hattie in Brooklyn. As a reminder of her mother's betrayal to her aunt, Grace lives a traumatic upbringing under her aunt's care - ultimately leading to the forced adoption of Grace's daughter, born out of wedlock.

The second part of the novel focusses on Dolores, or Lolo as she's more affectionately known. After finding out that she is unable to have children of her own, Lolo adopts Grace's daughter, Rae.

The story concludes with Rae's story - set many years later when Rae is now an adult herself, struggling to balance her career with raising children of her own.

Whilst at times the story felt disjointed and abrupt, especially when one woman's story ended and the other's began - this was a deeply emotive story that will stay with me.
