Denene Millner's "A Birth Mother, An Adoptive Mother, The Daughter to Both" is a poignant exploration of Black motherhood across generations. Grace's journey from segregated Virginia to the North, losing her Maw Maw, and facing betrayal paints a vivid backdrop. Lolo's resilience despite pain adds depth, her dreams clashing with secrets. Rae's discovery of her adoption and impending motherhood catalyzes a reckoning. Millner's prose is potent, poetic, and powerful, weaving through decades of cultural shifts with love. This beautifully wrought novel delves into intimate struggles with generational trauma and healing, offering a hymn to the resilience of Black mothers.
