Firstly, this is not really a book I would choose from a selection, however I do enjoy reading about individuals in their own words/minds from history to present time and from every nation. The book covers multiple generations of females, dipping in and out of their lives and traversing a timeline of 3 mothers. There is a lot to unpick, most is told from the perspective of the mother we are learning the history of. The most difficult part for me was the language/style of speech, in the same way it would be hard to understand an unfamiliar dialect. It was a little distracting, but a learning curve.

At times the story is quite harrowing, but I don't think it was unnecessarily gory or overly descriptive, the events were quite simply appalling. In historical terms we are shown how much has changed (or not) for women as they are born, grow up and have children themselves. There are lots of references to lack of options, expectations, resignation and downright cruelty. It's not an easy read, certainly though-provoking.
