I adore the cover of this book, the colours and strong imagery are very artistic and compelling.
The story itself is a family saga but also a searing account of what it means to be a black woman in the US.
From "midwife" Maw Maw Rubelle, who was grievously mistreated for trying to help a white woman, to Rae, a modern woman who still craves the family unit and the love of a good man. These women are linked via a shared history. Every single generation is let down, disappointed or abused yet it is LoLo who is the stand out character for me.
A truly horrific childhood goes on to affect every choice and decision she makes, projecting her own fears onto her daughter Rae. She creates a family that teeters on a foundation of lies and those lies have consequences.
There is lots to love in this book but I did find the shifting narrative/time frame difficult to keep up with at times.
