One Blood moves from decade to decade and from generation to generation. In that time single mothers faced some difficult choices, life was hard for all of them but even more so for young coloured women. Denene Miller writes about two women, Grace and Delores, and the daughter born to one but brought up by the other. Readers are drawn into the lives of all the characters starting with Grace, her mother and her grandmother. The author describes for her readers what life could be like for coloured people over the years and particularly the women who weren't always treated well by their men. This of course is true in any society and the author doesn't hesitate to tackle the most sensitive subjects and does it exceptionally well. I'm not aware of the bad feeling towards coloured people being as bad in the UK as in the USA so books like this are essential for people across the world to read and understand the hardship and suffering many people have experienced purely due to the prejudices of people who for some reason thought they were superior even though their actions proved the total opposite.
