This book is a must for anyone studying American social history particularly during the second half of the twentieth century.
It deals with racial and sexual prejudice by following the lives and bloodlines of 3 black American women - Grace, Lola and Rae. All three endure discrimination, segregation, poverty, violence and heartbreak.
Although fiction, it has the credibility of a biography with graphic descriptions of childbirth and racial hatred.
Having just read Maya Angelou’s 5 autobiographical books recently, I was reluctant to start reading One Blood so soon after but they complemented each other perfectly.
This was a difficult book to read - not only because of the subject matter but also because of the unfamiliar language of the characters. For that reason, I felt it was not a book that I would read for pleasure but for education.
