Grace is raised by her grandmother then due to situations is shipped to her formidable aunt.
There she falls in love and ends up pregnant, she desperately wants her child but her aunt ensures she is taken away.
Her adoptive mother Lolo is unable to have children so adopts Baby Rae.
Now Rae has grown and is a mother herself she sees the struggle through the generations of black women trying valiantly to hold their families together in the face of prejudice and societal pressure.
This was a wonderful read but I felt after a time Grace and her grandmother was a little forgotten and I wanted to know more.
It felt a little unfinished for me at the end and I just expected more but overall it was a fantastic read.
Very reminiscent to me of Maya Angelou I know why the caged bird sings and Alice Walker's The colour purple.
If readers enjoyed those powerful novels this is definitely in the same style.
